This week we had the pleasure of meeting with Josh Gluck, a singer/songwriter born and raised in Broward County, Florida. He’s currently finishing his last semester at University of Central Florida in Orlando and has recently started bringing his musical career to fruition. Although he has only released three songs so far, Gluck’s tracks have crisp and professional-sounding production as if he’s been doing it for decades. His tracks feature clean and detailed guitar rhythms with strong jazz influences(played by Gluck himself) which allow for his smooth voice to comfortably layer and complete the fullness of his sound. Gluck’s voice can be compared to that of Daniel Caesar’s, which is exemplified through his SoundCloud cover of Best Part, but with an alternative/pop twist as opposed to Caesar’s R&B direction. Gluck’s strong instrumentalism as a guitarist and singer combined with his lyricism brings emphasis on his ability to bring emotions into musical form. We wanted to learn more about Gluck, his experience as a musician, and what he has in-store for the future.
Here’s what we learned:
What are some things you like to do other than write music?
I just like being outside. Recently been super into riding my bike around to explore my city. I also like making and eating paninis.
How did you get started in the music industry? How was your journey to where you are today?
I actually don’t remember a time where I actively decided that I would be in the music industry. As cliche as it sounds, I just always felt like I was meant to be here and nowhere else. The journey itself so far is been incredible. I’ve met some of the greatest people I know through this world and just being in an industry where everything is based on connectivity is everything I’ve dreamed about.
Did you have other career paths, or passions that maybe clashed with music?
I’m incredibly interested in the science behind music. So when I first got to university I thought I was going to study Auditory Neuroscience. I guess that would’ve clashed in a way but the two are so deeply linked.
In your new song you say you’re “on the run” and “overdone”, what does this really mean to you and how did the feeling come to you originally?
To be completely honest, most of that feeling to me was incredibly broad when I wrote Overdone. At the time, I realized that there’s such a huge difference in outcome when you open yourself up and allow the things that are supposed to come to you to do so. This is of course opposed to chasing after things and being “on the run”. Like actually applying that phrase, “go where the wind takes you”, to life just brings so much more authenticity and ease.
Has your musical vision shifted at all since you started? If so where are you at now?
Oh it has shifted immensely. In fact it probably shifts every day. And I hope that it continues to take twists and turns! Because if I’m bored it’s probably a given that the listener is too. I’d say more so recently I’m starting to write music that I really enjoy listening to. I love listening to what I’ve done in the past but I find that I am honing in more on writing pieces catered to my own ear. I’m really excited about dropping this coming year.
Who or what are your biggest musical influences?
Jimi Hendrix, Anderson .Paak, Coldplay, Frank Ocean, John Mayer, Kendrick Lamar, Rick Rubin, Childish Gambino, and Solange.
Who would be your dream to collaborate with?
It is my absolute dream to sit in a room with Chris Martin and Rick Rubin. This is probably one of my most important goals. I wouldn’t even mind if we don’t end up making music and end up just sitting together and chatting. Just having the opportunity to chop it up with them would complete me.
As an artist, what are some of your major goals in the next five years?
Something that I’ve learned is that it’s really easy to focus your attention in places that are so far away from now that you lose focus in the present moment. That’s not to say that I don’t have a five-year plan, because it’s incredibly important to do so. But due to the nature of life and how unpredictable it can be, I simply try to focus all of my goals based around being the most me that I can be (if that makes sense haha). If every action I make is rooted in my authentic self, I feel comfortable believing that I’ll go where I’m supposed to go.
What can we expect from you in the near future? Do you have any new music or live shows coming soon?
Expect sooooooo much new music, live performances, branding development, etc in 2020. I am so ready to share much of what I’ve been working on. This year feels like it’s going to be pivotal for everyone. I’m really looking forward to watching how myself and others around me really grow into their own this year and unlock more of their potential. we’re all here doing it together and that’s what I find most beautiful.
